Ellen Berkley

Ellen Berkley grew up in Portland, Oregon and moved south for college to earn undergraduate degrees in both biochemistry and economics from Claremont McKenna College (CMC). After taking classes on topics ranging from strategic cost management to corporate finance, she began viewing health care issues through the lens of health economics. She worked in an organic chemistry lab at CMC, which fueled her passion for research. As a volunteer at two hospitals near CMC, she developed a love of patient care. And through a longtime engagement in sports—including competitive soccer, lacrosse, and track and field at CMC, as well as a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference steeplechase championship—she became increasingly aware of how nutrition, exercise, and a focus on disease prevention influence health. Berkley brings these interests in research, health economics, patient care, and wellness to pharmacy school at UCSF, where she is “inspired by problem-solving, working with teams, helping people, and applying clinical and scientific knowledge and innovative thinking.” She joins fellow pharmacy, medical, nursing, and physical therapy students in providing health coaching to inpatients at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital through the Word on the Wards (WoW) interprofessional program and elective.
