Stefan Habelitz

DDS, PhD, Postdoc Alum
Dr. Habelitz is a Professor in the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences at UCSF, where his research involves the study of self-assembly of amelogenin proteins and peptides for fibrillar apatite crystallization mimicking dental enamel, and the use polymeric process-directing agents for the mineralization of collagen fibrils and the repair of dental caries in human teeth as part of a minimally-invasive restorative dental treatment. Trained as a Materials Engineer and Chemist at the Universities of Erlangen and Jena in Germany, he joined UCSF 1999 to work on structure-properties relationships in teeth and the use of biomineralization to synthesize or repair enamel and dentin tissue damaged by dental caries. He directed the Oral and Craniofacial Sciences Graduate Program at UCSF from 2010 to 2012, and was voted Mentor of the Year at the School of Dentistry in 2014. Dr. Habelitz received the Cardiology Research Award from the American Association of Dental Research in 2016. He is a principal investigator on several awards by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.
